Mosaic Basics

with Martha Crawford

April 25th, 10am-2:30pm April 26th, 10am-12pm

6 participants

$120

Explore the age-old art of Mosaic! Ideal for all skill levels, you will be guided through the mosaic-making process from start to finish by learning the basic tools and techniques and tapping into your creative spirit. This 2 day workshop will cover everything you will need to continue to explore this wonderful and rewarding art form.

The details:

The workshop covers all mosaic materials, safety equipment and tools. Participants are asked to bring a completed sketch or design to work from-something simple and achievable given the limited time we have. All participants will take home a completed piece; either a mosaic panel with hanging system, a set of coasters or a wooden tray. Participants are encouraged to bring any Tesserae (mosaic materials which include left over tiles from home projects, old china, glass beads, shells, and pebbles) that they'd like to include in their project.

Saturday’s instruction will start with a brief introduction by looking at mosaic surfaces from around the world. You'll then select your project of choice, prepare your design and Tesserae to be used. This will be followed by adhering your mosaic materials onto your substrate-a very meditative and relaxing process! The completed mosaic piece will need to set overnight before it can be grouted and taken home.

Sunday’s short session will cover the grouting process, techniques and tools. Once you complete the satisfying step of grouting your mosaic piece, you will be able to take your finished piece home.

The workshop takes place on the stunning grounds of the Abbey Foundation, overlooking Anderson Valley. Be sure to bring a bagged lunch so you can enjoy the inspiring setting and take in the views during the lunch break.

Martha Crawford is an artist from San Francisco, who now lives in Boonville, Ca. After several decades of working as a graphic designer for leading California museums including the de Young Museum, UCLA Fowler Museum and The Hammer Museum in LA, she has redirected some of her focus and time on more tactile media and away from the computer screen. This has allowed her to return to teaching, leading workshops and collaborating on public art projects. She continues to learn new techniques, stay curious, and share with anyone who is seeking a creative outlet. Martha received her BFA in illustration from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA in production design from the American Film Institute.
